  • Book manuscripts (academic and trade)
  • Journal, magazine, and newspaper articles (long and short form)
  • Individual poems, stories, and essays
  • Grant proposals, reports, and budgets, as well as letters of interest, cover letters, and abstracts (for corporate, foundation, and government funders)
  • Fundraising material such as emails, crowdfunding campaigns, mailers, and website / social media copy
  • Resumes, CVs, and job cover letters

EDITING TOOLS

I generally edit using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function or Google Docs (which is best for shorter and/or collaborative documents), but I am open to other methods that might better suit your needs. No matter the platform, I am committed to working closely with you to ensure the best possible outcome for your project.

LET'S GET STARTED

LEVELS OF EDITING

Copyediting

Copyediting can range from relatively light to intensive, depending on the nature of the project and what stage the manuscript is in. After reviewing a sample of your project, I will work with you to determine what level of editing it needs, what kind of turnaround you can expect, and how much the project will cost. When copyediting, in addition to looking for all of the basic proofreading issues mentioned above, I edit for the following:
  • organizational issues such as topic sentences and transitions
  • repetitive word usage and sentence structure
  • consistency in spelling, numbers, capitalization, names, and hyphenation
  • unclear phrasing and jargon
  • consistency in notes and references cited

Proofreading

When proofreading, I edit for the following basics:
  •  typos that are not detected by spell-check
  • usage errors (such as “affect” versus “effect”)
  • punctuation errors
  • fact-checking of proper names and titles

Developmental Review

Developmental reviews are helpful for projects that are in a beginning stage and need direction or for documents like complex grant proposals. With this level of editing, I focus on the following:
  • asking clarifying questions about content, themes, details, major characters, etc.
  • helping you flesh out the most important and relevant aspects of your document so that they're front and center
  • offering my perspective on what I think are the strongest and most compelling aspects of the work
  • offering strategic suggestions for structural and tone revisions
